Single receiver bayesian inversion in a dispersive waveguide

Résumé

In shallow water (~100 m), low frequency (f<250 Hz) sound propagation is dispersive. Dispersion complicates the received signal, but it also carries information about the propagation waveguide and can be used as a tomographic tool. When using a single receiver and an impulsive source, geoacoustic inversion is carried out by estimating dispersion curves from the received signal and matching them with simulated replicas. Dispersion curves are estimated in the time-frequency domain using an advanced signal processing method called warping. Inversion is then performed using Bayesian methodology, which allows estimation of the seabed model parametrization (number of layers), the best value of the geoacoustic parameters (compressionnal sound speed and density) and the uncertainties of these results (posterior probability densities). This inversion scheme is applied on experimental data from the Shallow Water 2006 experiment. It allows for a good estimation of the seabed properties of the New Jersey shelf and also furnishes an accurate estimation of the source/receiver range.
