Comportement mécanique d'un revêtement de chrome déposé sur un substrat en alliage de zirconium

Abstract : The mechanical behavior of a 15 µm-thick chromium coating, deposited on a zirconium alloy substrate by a particular physical vapour deposition process, is studied using several experimental techniques at several scales ("biaxial" tests consisting in applying simultaneously an internal pressure and an axial loading on Zr-based alloy tubes coated with Cr, tensile tests under scanning electron microscope on sheet samples coated with Cr, digital image correlation, acoustic emission, electron backscatter diffraction). The particular coating studied cracks when the substrate starts to yield. A saturation of coating cracking is observed. Cracks preferentially propagate perpendicularly to the direction of the maximal principal stress. They propagate through the whole thickness of the coating but do not significantly penetrate into the substrate. No debonding of the coating is observed. Uncracked parts of the Cr coating seems to yield after initiation of the first cracks instead of cracking. Cracks are both intergranular and transgranular, in comparable proportions.
